Some of the most important stories of our time are the ones we are not supposed to see, and Edmund Clark has made it his life’s work to drag them into the light. An award-winning artist and photographer, Clark turns his lens on the hidden architecture of war, detention, and state power, creating images that are as visually stunning as they are politically charged. In this lecture, he’ll take us inside his process: how he gets access, how he constructs images that reveal what the powerful would prefer to keep buried, and how art can do what journalism sometimes can’t. Drawing from his new book, Cosmopolemos, co-authored with investigative journalist Crofton Black, and a career spent challenging official narratives, Clark will make the case that looking closely is one of the most radical things you can do.
