The violin has a singular, expressive sound and can be played with unthinkable speed, sparkle, and athleticism. It is no wonder that the instrument has been at the heart of the chamber music repertoire for centuries. In an engaging, in-depth festival designed for The Four Arts audience by Artistic Advisor Wu Han, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center presents three concerts that celebrate the many dimensions of the violin. The festival also features three informative lectures that shed light on the instrument’s extraordinary past, present, and future.
Niccolò Paganini was accused of making a deal with the devil to gain his finger-flying facility on the violin. You will hear his softer touch in the sweet Cantabile. Then, dip into the instrument’s wild potential with works of Ernest Bloch, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, and Jenö Hubay. The cello gets a star turn in a quartet by Alexander Borodin, and Camille Saint-Saëns will bring the audience to their feet with his dramatic Violin Sonata in D minor.
