The violin has a singular, expressive sound and can be played with unthinkable speed, sparkle, and athleticism. It is no wonder that the instrument has been at the heart of the chamber music repertoire for centuries. In an engaging, in-depth festival designed for The Four Arts audience by Artistic Advisor Wu Han, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center presents three concerts that celebrate the many dimensions of the violin. The festival also features three informative lectures that shed light on the instrument’s extraordinary past, present, and future.
Many great violinists have been brilliant composers themselves. The Belgian superstar Eugène Ysaÿe wrote astonishing violin solo sonatas, and he also inspired one of the greatest chamber works written by César Franck. Short delights and fancies by virtuoso violinists Henri Vieuxtemps, Henryk Wieniawski, and Fritz Kreisler, reveal the extraordinary technical capabilities of Chamber Music Society’s violinists, and Kreisler’s famed Liebesleid and Liebesfreud offer a heartrending close to the evening.
