The violin has a singular, expressive sound and can be played with unthinkable speed, sparkle, and athleticism. It is no wonder that the instrument has been at the heart of the chamber music repertoire for centuries. In an engaging, in-depth festival designed for The Four Arts audience by Artistic Advisor Wu Han, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center presents three concerts that celebrate the many dimensions of the violin. The festival also features three informative lectures that shed light on the instrument’s extraordinary past, present, and future.
On this program, three hefty sonatas from different points in time demonstrate the vibrant versatility of the violin. In Giuseppe Tartini’s hallucinatory “Devil’s Trill” Sonata, the performer must go to demonic depths to pull off the challenges in the score. Ludwig van Beethoven’s fiery “Kreutzer” Sonata and Richard Strauss’s lush Sonata in E-flat major show the instrument thriving in the Classical and Romantic eras.
