In this online course, we will explore the remarkable career of a writer who overcame significant social and economic obstacles to become one of the most celebrated figures in literature. Through close reading and discussion of Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion, we will examine Jane Austen’s treatment of love and marriage, gender and identity, and class and society, while considering why her novels still speak so powerfully to readers today.
Joseph Luzzi is the Asher B. Edelman Professor of Literature at Bard, where he has taught since 2002. He is the author of eight books, including Dante’s Divine Comedy: A Biography (Princeton University Press, 2024) and Botticelli’s Secret (Norton, 2022), a New Yorker Best Books of 2022 selection and Phi Beta Kappa Ralph Waldo Emerson Award finalist. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Times of London, Chronicle of Higher Education, and many others.
