Basic sewing skills are employed, or will be demonstrated, for this workshop. We are embracing the slow-craft style movement with every stitch, word, or drawing. No machines, just needle, thread, and markers.
Our collective set of quilt blocks and memories will be combined to make a quilt for the library called The King Library Memory Quilt and housed in the library’s collection. Your memories will be part of history and preserved for generations to enjoy.
Instructor: Kristin Beck
Biography: A multidisciplinary artist, Kristin M. Beck’s work is influenced by the vibrant culture of her native South Florida. Her use of bold colors, recurring patterns, and strong lines reflect its energy. Her textile- and fiber-based works honor the legacy of women while mixing multiple substrates together to create one object, or a series of works, that is integral to this avenue of storytelling. Beck has exhibited work in over 50 exhibitions, and, in 2024, she received an Artist Support grant from the Broward County Cultural Division.
The King Library Memory Quilt is a community art and storytelling project inviting patrons to share memories, reflections, or drawings on fabric quilt blocks. Throughout the month of August, participants may drop into the library to work on a quilt block during open hours or pick up materials to complete one at home. Donated fabrics for the project are generously provided by Coniglio Palm Beach.
Using simple hand sewing, writing, or drawing, each block becomes a small personal artwork. At the end of the month, all completed blocks will be collected and joined together into The King Library Memory Quilt, a collaborative textile piece that reflects the voices and creativity of the community.
