A French King Tours the United States with Emmanuel Ducamp

In 1796, in the midst of the French revolution, a 23-year old French prince, Louis-Philippe d’Orléans, cousin of Louis XVI and future king of the French from 1830-1848, sailed to America. The Duc d’Orléans kept a journal covering this incredible trip ― from Philadelphia to Virginia, New York, the Great Lakes, the Ohio River, and New Orleans ― with interesting details about the landscapes they passed through, the life of American settlers, and the Indian tribes they encountered. Emmanuel Ducamp is a Professor at the École du Louvre.
