Kristin Schnell will discuss her involvement in the acclaimed book Aviary, a collaborative project featuring the work of 55 photographers showcasing a remarkable range of artistic approaches to the subject of birds. She will introduce her own photographic work and accompanying book, which also explores birds. In her images, constructed spaces, chance encounters, and curiosity become integral elements, creating a compelling interplay between intention and unpredictability. By conversing about these two projects, this talk offers a broader reflection on the creative process of image-making and explores the rich, often complex relationship between humans and animals.
Kristin Schnell (b. 1968) is a German photographer based on the Baltic Sea. In her staged photographic works, birds become symbolic figures exploring freedom, human confinement, chance, and the complex relationship between humans and animals. Working without digital manipulation, she creates constructed environments in which unpredictability and curiosity remain essential elements of the image. Her monograph Of Cages and Feathers was published by Kehrer Verlag in 2024. Schnell has received several international awards, including being selected for the Top 50 of the Photolucida Critical Mass in 2024 and 2025, and her work has been exhibited and published internationally.
