The Samuel J. Heyman Memorial Lecture

Lord Roberts is the author of 20 major histories and biographies which have been translated into 28 languages and won 13 literary prizes. These include Churchill: Walking with Destiny, Napoleon: A Life, Masters and Commanders, The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War, and The Last King of America: The Misunderstood Reign of George III.

Lord Roberts is the Bonnie and Tom McCloskey Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he hosts the podcast “Secrets of Statecraft with Andrew Roberts.” He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society, and a visiting professor at the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London.

In 2023 he spoke for The Four Arts Campus on the Lake on the British monarch George III. In 2024 he was an O’Keeffe Speaker with General David Petraeus, discussing their co-authored book Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare 1945 to Ukraine, which was a New York Times best-seller. Henry Kissinger praised Lord Roberts as “a great historian who is always relevant to contemporary thinking and contemporary problems.” It has been said of him that he is “one of the greatest biographers in the English language today” (Sir Noel Malcolm, Daily Telegraph). In November 2022, Andrew Roberts was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Roberts of Belgravia.

The Samuel J. Heyman Memorial Lecture
Samuel J. Heyman was educated at the Wooster School, Yale College, and Harvard Law School. After government service as the Chief Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, his business career began as a real estate developer in 1969. In 1982 he took over the board of GAF Corporation, today the largest manufacturer of residential roofing in the United States. Mr. Heyman was widely known for his philanthropy and interest in improving the quality of Federal Public Service. In 2008, President George W. Bush awarded Mr. Heyman the Presidential Citizens Medal. The Samuel J. Heyman Memorial Lecture was established in 2017 by Ronnie Heyman in honor of her husband.
