The Walter S. Gubelmann Memorial Lecture

In today’s digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way we work, offering tools that enhance our capabilities and efficiency. However, AI’s strengths and weaknesses can be unpredictable. It’s a tool that’s brilliant at some tasks but unexpectedly struggles with others. To harness its full potential, some professionals adopt a dual approach: one where they clearly divide tasks between human and AI, and another where they collaborate closely with AI, blending their efforts. But a word of caution: while AI can amplify our skills, over-relying on it can lead to mistakes and a lack of creativity. As we step into an AI-enhanced future, our challenge is to use it wisely, ensuring it complements rather than replaces human ingenuity.

Walter S. Gubelmann was president of the Board of Trustees of The Society of the Four Arts for25 years. Two memorials mark his contributions. First, funds were raised to establish the Walter S. Gubelmann Memorial Lecture each year, in honor of the former president’s many years as chairman of the lecture committee. Then, two years after his death in 1988, the Silver King by sculptor D.H.S. Wehle was installed in the fountain at the entrance to the Esther B. O’Keeffe Building.
